Category definitions:

The role of ‘Account Manager’ will vary from company to company in terms of job specification, job purpose, level of seniority and the person specification. To help you decide whether this is an appropriate category for you to enter, the Steering Group will be assessing the following areas in both the stage one Management Challenge and the finals:

  • Your interaction with the main customer groups – StHAs, PCTs and PBC Leads (or equivalent in Wales / Scotland / N.Ireland) and how your activities create a positive environment for your medicines in your local health economy
  • The degree to which you influence and manage local resources (financial and possibly manpower)
  • Your involvement with any collaborative projects and how they add value within the local health economy
  • Your commercial objectives, how they are agreed and aligned with those of the local health economy, how is success measured ?

Aspiring Regional Business Manager
You may be a Medical Representative with a few years experience on territory and are seeking to move into first line sales management.  Whilst this category is not exclusively for people currently in the field (you may be in business support for example), the challenges set and competencies explored by the judges will draw on field force/man management scenarios.  Success in this category, would flag to your bosses that you have the potential to progress as a first line manager.

To ensure the competition is aligned with any PDP, the steering group have asked that if you do decide to enter this category you should get the OK from your manager to go ahead.

New Regional Business Manager
You have been in a first line sales management position for a relatively short period of time and whilst you have gained some experience in the day to day management of a sales team, you still feel you have much to learn in this role.  The challenges set by the judges will assume some basic management experience.

Senior Regional Business Manager
You are an experienced first line sales manager and have a solid track record in running a sales team.  Your experience is perhaps encouraging your bosses to delegate tasks that are increasing your responsibilities beyond your main remit.  You may find that other less experienced managers look to you for guidance at times.

You are totally committed to your current role and would like to demonstrate to your company and your industry that your are a great first line manager.

You may also feel that you have the potential to take on more responsibility as a future second line manager. The challenges set by the judges in this category will assume good solid, all round experience as a first line sales manager but in addition a deeper, more strategic grasp of the business environment and your role within it.

RBM Team
You are part of a team that wants the opportunity to go head to head with top teams from other companies.  You may already work together in the same division or business unit or alternatively, you may be in different parts of the organisation and just feel you want to give it a go!

The RBM Team category is for teams of four RBMs and the challenges set by the judges will explore your collective experience as first line managers and your ability to work together as a team.
