How the Competition Works

Entry Process

  • Individuals can enter the competition directly if their entry is approved by their company.
  • Companies can nominate individuals for all categories.
  • Individuals can nominate colleagues but nominees must have company approval before their entry will be accepted.

Judging process

The judging process is being clarified and refined by the Executive Steering Group and will be announced shortly.
The process is likely to be a combination of elements including a written paper, an interview or role play session and a presentation to a panel of judges.

Judging process - Excluding medical information

CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF A SCIENTIFIC PAPER

This will be an open book exercise. It will be set 4 weeks before the finals day and entrants will have 1 week to complete it. The aim is to explore the finalist’s competencies in understanding, evaluating and extracting data from a scientific paper.

  • There will be ONE paper per category
  • Papers will be graded before the finals day.
  • Papers will be made anonymous before being graded

COMPETENCY BASED INTERVIEW

All finalists will be briefed on the format and scope of the interview. Each interview will last approximately 20 minutes - and is followed by a 10 minute scoring & feedback recording session with the assessors (without the finalist present)

PRESENTATION

This session will last for 20 minutes and the aim is to explore the finalist’s competencies in communications skills and mastery of their chosen specialist area

  • The finalists will bring a pre-prepared presentation
  • The presentation will be followed by questions from the judging panel
  • Finalists will be marked against pre-defined criteria for the content, their presentation skills and their response to assessor questions
  • After the session the judging panel will score the presentation

Judging Process - Medical Information only

SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION EXERCISE

  • This will be an open book exercise
  • It will be set four weeks before the finals day and entrants will have one week to complete it
  • The aim is to explore the finalist’s competencies in understanding, evaluating and extracting data from a scientific paper.
  • There will be ONE paper per category
  • Papers will be graded before the finals day
  • Papers will be anonymised before being graded

COMPETENCY BASED INTERVIEW

All finalists will be briefed on the format and scope of the interview. Each interview will last approximately 20 minutes - and is followed by a 10 minute scoring & feedback recording session with the assessors (without the finalist present).

ROLE PLAY SESSION

This session will last for 20 minutes and the aim is to explore the finalist’s competencies in communications skills and mastery of their chosen specialist area

  • The role play will take the form of three telephone calls
  • The role play will be followed by questions from the judging panel
  • Finalists will be marked against pre-defined criteria
  • After the session the judging panel will score the entrants performance

Scoring Process

  • The final score will be 40% interview, 40% presentation and 20% paper
  • Winners will be announced at the dinner later that evening
  • Feedback will be sent to entrants within six weeks
  • Telephone feedback from judges will be available after the day - on a pre-arranged basis
