Data management solutions specialist Phase Forward has signed a multi-year alliance agreement with AAIPharma, the US company reborn as a pure-play contract research organisation (CRO) last year following a tangle with bankruptcy as a pharmaceutical manufacturer.

Under the terms of the contract, AAIPharma will offer services centred on two Phase Forward products as part of its solution set: the InForm Integrated Trial Management electronic data capture (EDC) system; and Clintrial, a clinical data management product that can be used to collect, manage and review electronically captured and paper-based study data.

According to Phase Forward, AAIPharma was drawn to the products’ “straightforward implementation requirements and intuitive interface, requiring very little training post-deployment,” as well as Phase Forward’s “global reach and stability” and its innovative approach to CRO partnership. Tying up with CROs has been an important part of Phase Forward’s strategy, as demonstrated by the recent consolidation of its alliances with ICON, Parexel and Quintiles.

Flexible partner

Phase Forward’s flexible partner programme “will allow us to expand and customise our offerings at a pace that best suits our growing organisation, as well as our clients,” said Anne Wiles, senior vice-president, Data Systems and Processes for AAIPharma. “As EDC adoption continues, it is important that we offer the technology that sponsors view as an industry standard, while also supporting those clients requiring a solution that supports both electronic and paper-based trials.”

CROs “continue to play a critical role in bringing the efficiencies of electronic data capture and management to clinical trials, and will ultimately help move the industry further along the adoption continuum over the next several years,” commented Bob Weiler, chief executive officer and president of Phase Forward.
