The Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) is collaborating with two of the country’s research and development institutions in an effort to encourage pharmaceutical innovation in India.

The tie-ups, which are part of OPPI’s Public-Private Partnership Initiative, involve the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research (NIPER) and the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR).

One component of the initiative is the Scientists and Young Scientists Awards, set up by OPPI to stimulate original research in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. Nominees from NIPER and CSIR will be assessed by a panel of independent judges and the winners will each receive a cash award of Rs 100,000, as well as a citation and trophy, to be presented at the OPPI Annual General Meeting in Mumbai scheduled for 8 August 2009.

The deadline for applications is 6 July 2009. Research may be submitted in the areas of pharmaceutical chemistry (e.g., new chemical entities as potential therapeutic agents), pharmaceutics (novel and improved drug delivery systems), pharmacology, pharmaceutical biotechnology/nanotechnology or pharmacognosy and phytochemistry.
