A co-operation agreement signed between the South African government and the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC) will give scientists in South Africa access to the latest European thinking in molecular biology research.

The EMBC is the intergovernmental funding body for the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), which promotes excellence in the molecular life sciences by recognising and fostering talented scientists. The co-operation agreement facilitates access for South African scientists to the group’s core programmes, such as EMBO Fellowships, EMBO Courses & Workshops, and the EMBO Young Investigator Programme.

The Organization will also annually sponsor one practical course or workshop and one plenary lecture to be held in South Africa, “thus encouraging local participation and awareness”, it noted.

Up to three South African scientists will have the opportunity to network with young European group leaders at EMBO Young Investigator meetings, while the EMBO Life Sciences Mobility Portal will post targeted information for reciprocal career development and funding opportunities between South Africa and Europe.
