ProTrials Research, a specialist contract research organisation (CRO) based in Sunnyvale, US, has expanded its European footprint by setting up a wholly owned subsidiary in Edinburgh, UK.

ProTrials Global Limited will manage ongoing clinical trials in Italy, Spain and the UK, and will be responsible for additional growth in European markets, its parent said.

In charge of the new subsidiary is Gillian Reid, who has been appointed ProTrials’ director of business operations, Europe.

Reid brings more than 25 years’ worth of clinical research experience to the task, including stints with Charles River Laboratories, Inveresk Research, Napp Laboratories and Merck Sharp & Dohme. Most recently she was the director of global key accounts at Chiltern International UK.

Return to growth

Research firm Frost & Sullivan predicted late last year that the global CRO market had returned to growth and was on target for revenues of US$43.09 billion by 2017, ProTrials notes.

“With ProTrials Global Limited based in the United Kingdom, we are in a stronger position to help sponsors simultaneously conduct clinical trials in North America and Europe, and to guide them in the different complexities for conducting clinical research abroad,” commented Jodi Andrews, co-founder and chief executive officer of ProTrials Research.
